SPRING AWAKENING

Design Statement

The lighting design for this production follows the young characters' emotional path as they grow and evolve in a world controlled by adult gatekeepers who hope to mold them into versions of themselves. While the children attempt to navigate their own paths, we see explosions of saturated color, texture and aerial effects as the musical numbers take on a modern day concert quality, mimicking the rebellious young energy exploding towards the audience.
The book scenes, in contrast, take on a less saturated and more natural tone to juxtapose the everyday events with the internal emotional turmoil of the young characters.
